Never Say Never

Hey, 

So this was an interesting week. Starting from Wednesday, because we had interviews with the Babins! It was only my second interview with them. It may be different in other missions, but here we have one-on-one interviews with both of them. Sœur Babin is actually known for being more intimidating than her husband, so I was super nervous for her interview. But both of them went very well. They are both doing so awesome and are a great blessing for all of us. I couldn't imagine being a mission president over 200+ missionaries in such a big area.

On Saturday, we watched "The Cokeville Miracle" for a ward activity. It was really good. It made me cry. So you should see it immediately. We actually had an "ami" at the movie, too, so he was impacted a lot as well.

We surprisingly had 2 "amis" at church yesterday. One of them has been in a rehabilitation centre for a smoking problem, and the other struggles heavily with alcohol and drugs. It was miraculous to see them both at church, and it's ironic because on paper they are our hardest amis, but at the end of the day I guess they have more desire than anyone right now.

Tonight we're finally going to teach Guillermo, again!

Never say never!!

I've notice a lot of phrases that people say in French, like "en fait" which means "in fact", or "actually". But I hear it like 100 times a day and people say it in situations when I would never say in fact or actually. 

Another phrase is "c'est gentil, merci." Which I think means "It's nice of you, thanks." I hear that one a lot, too.

I feel like my French is improving more this transfer and I can understand people more and more each day. And to be fair, I think my Spanish is getting better every day, too.

I have a lot of help.

Boy, is life exciting right now in Brussels.

P.S. I in fact did find out about Glenn Frey's death last Wednesday. It was very sad. He was probably my favourite Eagle.

Hola,

Esta semana ha sido interesante. Empezó con el miércoles porque tuvimos entrevistas con los Babin. Apenas era mi segunda entrevista con ellos. No sé si sea igual en todas las misiones, pero aquí tenemos una entrevista con el presidente Babin y una con la hermana Babin. La hermana Babin de hecho tiene fama de ser más intimidante que el presidente, así que estaba con muchos nervios antes de hablar con ella. Al final, las dos entrevistas estuvieron muy bien. Los dos están haciendo una gran labor y son una enorme bendición para todos nosotros. Me cuesta imaginar ser presidente de misión de más de 200 misioneros en un área tan grande.

El sábado vimos la película “The Cokeville Miracle” como actividad de barrio. La película está bastante buena y hasta me hizo llorar. Así que sería bueno que la vean en cuanto puedan. Para la película también estuvo presente un “ami” y al parecer a él también le llegó mucho.

Sorpresivamente, ayer fueron dos “amis” a la capilla. Uno de ellos ha estado en un centro de rehabilitación debido a su adicción al tabaco, mientras que el otro tiene serios problemas de alcoholismo y drogadicción. Fue como un milagro verlos a los dos en la capilla, y es irónico porque, en teoría, ellos son nuestros amis más duros, pero a fin de cuentas parece que son los que tienen más deseo que nadie en este momento.

¡Hoy finalmente le daremos otra lección a Guillermo!

¡Nunca digas nunca!

He notado que aquí la gente usa muchas frases en francés como “en fait” que significa “de hecho”. La cosa es que la escucho como 100 veces al día y la gente la usa en situaciones en las que nada que ver.

Otra frase es “c'est gentil, merci”, que creo que significa “muy amable de su parte, gracias”. Esa también se escucha a cada rato.

Siento como que con este cambio estoy mejorando el francés y cada vez entiendo más lo que dice la gente. Además, para ser justos, el español también los estoy mejorando.

Recibo mucha ayuda.

En serio que la cosa se está poniendo buena aquí en Bruselas.

P.D. Pues, de hecho, me enteré de la muerte de Glenn Frey el miércoles. Fue bien triste. Creo que era mi favorito de The Eagles.

Hey,

This past week great. We had Elder Patrick Kearon of the Seventy come give us missionaries a training in Paris on Thursday. He gave us all a lot of therapy and motivation. He basically said to "stop worrying about ourselves and to focus on the task. To go out and attack the day and to leave it all in the field. A lot of the times we worry that we can't speak the language, but we can't allow ourselves to do that because as long as we have the Spirit, people will be touched no matter how badly we speak French." I really liked that. We all liked that and we all needed it because this area is great, but if one gets caught up in the fact that almost everyone rejects us, it can be really hard, so it's important for me and for all of us in European missions to stay strong in that regard.

We taught Roberto again and he's starting to read the Book of Mormon, which is awesome. Now we just need to find a way to get him to church.

On Saturday we had a ward activity organised by the Ward Mission Leader where we went to a movie theatre and he showed the movie Freetown. A bunch of people came and a lot of less-active members came, which I was glad to see.

I've noticed that a lot of missionaries get caught up in the finding new investigators, which is great, but what a lot of us don't understand is that finding less-actives and bonding with the young adults and young men is just as important. There is a young adult in the ward, who is half Filipino and half Swedish, and he's planning on going on a mission in August. That is something to celebrate just as much as a convert baptism. I think that we are too caught up in the numbers and too focused on how many people we taught this week, but one does not have to teach a lesson to make an impact on another person’s life. Numbers are important, but they never tell the whole story.

Anyway, I'm happy to be in this position right now and it's getting better every day.

A lovely Belgian house in Brussels

It's great to see you guys had fun in Mexico. I'm a little jealous. Anyway, it's awesome to hear that our extended family is doing well and Mexico is doing well.

Here a picture of the hotel where Mami stayed in Brussels. I didn't realize that I'd past by it about 6 or 7 times until she told me she stayed there. We always go get some waffles at a shop just down the road from the hotel. The hotel is really nice. It looks like one of the nicer ones in town.

Hola,

Esta semana fue fabulosa. El élder Patrick Kearon de los Setenta nos dio una capacitación a los misioneros en París el día jueves. Nos dio mucha terapia y motivación. En esencia nos dijo que: “dejemos de preocuparnos por nosotros mismos y que nos centremos en nuestra tarea. Que salgamos todos los días con ímpetu y que lo dejemos todo en el campo. Muchas veces nos preocupamos porque no hablamos el idioma, pero no debemos hacerlo porque siempre y cuando tengamos el Espíritu, las personas lo sentirán aunque no hablemos bien el francés”. Me gustó ese mensaje porque creo que todos necesitábamos escucharlo. Estamos en una buena área, pero si nos desanimamos por el hecho de que casi toda la gente nos rechaza, puede llegar a ser muy difícil. Por eso es importante que todos los que estamos en las misiones en Europa nos mantengamos firmes en ese aspecto.

Le dimos otra lección a Roberto y ya está leyendo el Libro de Mormón, lo cual es magnífico. Ahora solamente tenemos que encontrar la manera de que vaya a la Iglesia.

El sábado tuvimos una actividad que organizó el líder misional de barrio, en la que fuimos a un cine y vimos la película Freetown. Muchas personas asistieron, entre ellas varios miembros menos activos y me agradó verlos.

Me he dado cuenta de que muchos misioneros se concentran solamente en encontrar a nuevos investigadores, lo cual está bien, pero muchos de nosotros no comprendemos que el hecho de encontrar a los menos activos y de hermanarnos con los jóvenes adultos solteros y con los hombres jóvenes es igual de importante. Hay un joven en el barrio que es mitad filipino y mitad suizo, y quien está planeando servir en una misión en agosto. Es algo tan digno de celebrarse como lo es el bautismo de un converso. Creo que nos enfrascamos demasiado en las cifras y nos preocupamos mucho por la cantidad de personas a quienes damos lecciones durante la semana, pero no tenemos que dar una lección para tocar la vida de alguien. Las cifras son importantes, pero nunca cuentan la historia completa.

De cualquier modo, estoy contento de estar donde estoy y las cosas mejoran día con día.

Una hermosa casa belga en Bruselas

Me alegra ver que se la pasaron bien en México. Me da un poco de envidia, pero es bueno saber que la familia está bien y que México está bien.

¡¡¡¡Sí se puede!!!!

Les mando una foto del hotel donde Mami se hospedó en Bruselas. No me había dado cuenta de que había pasado por ahí 6 o 7 veces hasta que ella me dijo que se hospedó en él. Siempre compramos wafles en una tienda que está en la misma calle. El hotel se ve muy bien y parece ser uno de los mejores de la ciudad.

New transfer!

Hey,
This week has been very interesting.  On Wednesday morning I said goodbye to Elders Palfreyman and Madsen. Then, Elder Hein moved to Liege. I got my new companion, Elder Cisneros, later that night. He is from Tamaulipas, Mexico. He speaks Spanish and English perfectly, and French almost perfectly. He's super cool and I'm glad to have him as a companion. The Zone Leaders moved in from Liege to live in our apartment.
It was kind of hard to process when Elder Palfreyman and Madsen left because all four of us in the apartment became very close and then all of a sudden there are three new people in the apartment. But regardless, I have a great feeling about what me and Elder Cisneros will do together.
We visited the Ecuadorean man, Roberto, again this week. His head is all over the place in terms of the Bible and what he wants to talk about with us. So it was a little challenging to be in control of the lesson, but he promised to start reading the Book of Mormon which will be key to his conversion.
This week will be exciting because we'll have a conference with Elder Patrick Kearon of the Seventy in Paris.
I love the members here so much because they are all so willing to feed us whenever they can. I hope I stay in Brussels for a long time.

¡Nueva transferencia!

Hola,

Esta semana ha sido muy interesante. El miércoles por la mañana nos despedimos de los élderes Palfreyman y Madsen. Después, el élder Hein se mudó a Lieja. Mi nuevo compañero, el élder Cisneros, llegó esa noche. Es de Tamaulipas, México. Habla español e inglés perfectamente, y francés casi perfecto. Es muy buena onda y estoy contento de tenerlo de compañero. Los líderes de zona se mudaron de Lieja a nuestro departamento.

Fue difícil ver partir al élder Palfreyman y al élder Madsen porque los cuatro que estábamos en el departamento nos habíamos hecho muy amigos y de repente hay tres nuevos misioneros en el departamento. No obstante, tengo un buen sentimiento en cuanto a lo que el élder Cisneros y yo podremos hacer juntos.

Durante esta semana, volvimos a visitar a Roberto, quien es de Ecuador. Él quiere conversar sobre distintos temas de la Biblia con nosotros. Es un poco difícil tener el control de la lección, pero nos prometió que va a comenzar a leer el Libro de Mormón, lo cual será crucial para su conversión.

Esta semana será emocionante porque tendremos una conferencia con el élder Patrick Kearon, de los Setenta, en París.

Siento aprecio por los miembros de aquí porque tienen la disposición de invitarnos a comer siempre que pueden. Espero quedarme en Bruselas mucho tiempo.

Happy New Year!

Bonjour, tout le monde!

This week has been great. We had Paulino's baptism on Saturday. It was great. His dad baptised him and it was great to finally see him go in the water because he's a great kid and I see a great future for him in the Church.

This week was also great because we got to see movies on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. On New Year's Eve we went to the ward mission leader's apartment to eat and over there we watched Guardians of the Galaxy and Saving Mr. Banks. Our district leader got mad at us for watching PG-13 movies, so I guess they're not mission appropriate. So then on New Year's Day we only watched Disney movies.

This week we taught Roberto and Lourdes again, the couple from Ecuador. We watched the Restoration video with them and they loved it. They really liked the idea of a restoration. I really liked what I see in them. I also got to eat a nice seafood dish at a member's house.

We got transfers news on Saturday. It turns out that I'm staying in Brussels and Elder Palfreyman, my companion, is going home and being replaced by Elder Cisneros. I hear that he's from Mexico. So I'm really excited for that. The zone leaders are moving to Brussels, too.

I'll be the only Elder in Brussels who's staying. Because the other companionship, Elder Madsen and Hein, Madsen is going home and Hein is being transferred to Liege. It's sad but exciting at the same time. I can't believe I'm already done with my first transfer! 15 more to go!

Well, happy New Year and let's make it better than the last one.

2016: the year when I'm on my mission that whole year, the year Germany wins the Euro and the year Usain Bolt establishes himself as the greatest Olympian ever.

¡Feliz Año Nuevo!

¡Buenos días a todos!

Esta semana ha sido magnífica. El bautismo de Paulino fue el sábado y fue una linda experiencia. Su papá lo bautizó y fue una gran satisfacción verlo finalmente entrar al agua porque es un buen muchacho y percibo que tendrá un gran futuro en la Iglesia.

También fue una buena semana porque vimos películas el día 31 y el día de Año Nuevo. El día 31 fuimos al departamento del líder misional de barrio a comer y ahí vimos las películas Guardianes de la Galaxia y El sueño de Walt. Nuestro líder de distrito se enojó con nosotros por ver películas PG-13, así que supongo que no son apropiadas para los misioneros. Por ello, el día de Año Nuevo solamente vimos películas de Disney.

Durante la semana, volvimos a enseñar a Roberto y a Lourdes, la pareja de Ecuador. Vimos el video de la Restauración con ellos y les agradó. Les gustó mucho la idea de que haya habido una restauración. Siento que tienen potencial. También tuve el gusto de comer un delicioso platillo de mariscos en la casa de un miembro.

Recibimos noticias sobre las transferencias el sábado. Resulta ser que me quedaré en Bruselas y el élder Palfreyman, mi compañero, termina su misión y se va a casa, por lo que lo reemplazará el élder Cisneros. Escuché que es de México. Estoy emocionado por ello. Los líderes de zona también se van a mudar a Bruselas.

Yo seré el único élder que se quedará en Bruselas. Sucede que en el otro compañerismo del élder Madsen y el élder Hein, Madsen también ya se va a casa y Hein se muda a Lieja. Siento tristeza y entusiasmo al mismo tiempo. ¡No puedo creer que ya terminé mi primera transferencia! ¡Solamente me faltan 15!

¡Que tengan un feliz Año Nuevo y que sea mejor que el anterior!

2016: el año en que estoy en mi misión todo el año, el año en que Alemania gana la Eurocopa, y el año en que Usain Bolt se consagra como el mejor atleta olímpico de la historia.
