Zone Conference, Nancy, & More Miracles

This week, we had zone conference in Nancy. It was awesome. We had some great formations by the STLs about testifying about the Book of Mormon, the zone leaders talked about helping our Amis to get over their fears, Sœur Babin talked about mission culture, the Assistants talked about using ward members and President talked about planning for each transfer. It was so fun. President made a lot of funny jokes that made everyone laugh. And we were very much enlightened by everyone who spoke.

Then we went back to Nancy to do exchanges with our Zone Leaders, Kelley and Stephenson. We had a great time. Elder Kelley and I went to visit an awesome member and then the next day, I went with Stephenson to this small town about 15 minutes away by train to look for a referral.  It was the smallest city I've ever been in Europe. But it was very nice and everyone was white! Overall, we had a great time with our Zone Leaders. By the way, Nancy is a pretty nice ville by itself.

We got to see Maxence again this week. He's still apprehensive about coming to church, but he is still getting his Book of Mormon reading in. He's progressing slowly, but he's still looking forward to seeing us each week. We're feeling good about the direction he's going right now.

Yesterday, again we expected 2 amis to come to church for certain. Sacrament meeting started and ended and they hadn't showed up yet. However, right after sacrament meeting ended, our ami, Phillipe, who we've only seen twice, decided to come for the last two hours! We showed the Restoration video for him in second hour and he loved it. It was such a shock to see him at church because we haven't had contact with him for about four weeks until now!

The Field is White

We finally got to see our ami, Maxence, for the first time in over 2 months. He's a 32 year-old White French man. He's appeared to be more open and willing to listen than he's been before, according to Elder Bennett. He has a busy job, so it's hard for him to get to church on Sunday's, but we believe he just needs a strong spiritual experience to start acting on the things he's been taught. Because we talked to him about Sabbath Day Observance last time and he completely agreed with the concept, but wasn't willing to live it... yet.  We're going to see him again later this week to keep working with him on that. 

Unfortunately, we weren't able to see any other Amis this week because all of them didn't show up to the rendezvous, however, we got a call from a non-member, Alexandre, friend of the bishop who went to the Meet the Mormons activity a few weeks ago, and he told us he wanted to meet with us and the bishop as soon as possible. We were shocked because at the activity a few weeks prior, he was very skeptical and not buying anything, however, the bishop's wife taught him practically the whole restoration and gave him a BOM with her testimony written inside, and we gave him a restoration brochure, too. He seemed pretty reluctant to read the material, and honestly we didn't expected him to take it seriously, but he did nonetheless, and we're going to try to have a family home evening rendezvous this week with him and the Bishop's family. 

We had a baptism this past Saturday in the Mulhouse chapel for an ami of the Belfort Elders, who are just the next big town to the west. They had to come over here because they don't have a chapel in their building, but it was the first convert baptism in Belfort in over 10 years!! He's an African ex-convict who has an amazing life story of once being a drug-dealer to  prisoner to now being a completely changed person. Our zone leaders were so excited that they came and attended the baptism as well. 

I guess the field is white after all.

It's been a great week full of ups and downs, but we did have our fair share of miracles, so we can't complain.

El campo está blanco

Después de casi dos meses, finalmente pudimos ver a nuestro ami Maxence. Es un señor francés de raza blanca y de 32 años, y, por lo que dice el élder Bennet, ahora se muestra más abierto y dispuesto a escuchar que antes. Lo único es que trabaja mucho y le cuesta mucho ir a la Iglesia los domingos, pero creemos que todo lo que necesita es tener una experiencia espiritual que le llegue y hacer las cosas que le hemos enseñado. Por ejemplo, la vez pasada le hablamos de la observancia del día de reposo y estuvo totalmente de acuerdo con el concepto; sin embargo, no estaba dispuesto a vivirlo… no todavía. Así que esta semana lo volveremos a ver y seguiremos trabajando con él.

Lamentablemente, esta semana no pudimos ver a ninguno de los demás amis, ya que ninguno de ellos cumplió con su rendezvous; no obstante, recibimos una llamada de Alexandre, un tipo que no es miembro, es amigo del obispo y asistió a ver la película Conozca a los mormones que mostramos hace unas semanas, y nos dijo que quería juntarse con nosotros y el obispo a la brevedad posible. Nos quedamos en shock porque durante la película se mostró muy escéptico y no creyó nada, pero la esposa del obispo prácticamente le dio toda la charla de la Restauración, un folleto sobre el tema y un Libro de Mormón en el cual incluyó su testimonio. Él se mostró bastante renuente a leer el material y honestamente no esperamos que se lo tomara en serio, pero estábamos equivocados, así que esta semana intentaremos tener una Noche de Hogar con él y la familia del obispo.

El sábado en la capilla de Mulhouse tuvimos el bautismo de un ami de los élderes de Belfort, que es el pueblo siguiente que queda al oeste de aquí. Tuvieron que venir aquí porque en su edificio no tienen capilla, ¡y además fue el primer bautismo de un converso en Belfort en más de 10 años! Se trata de un africano ex presidiario cuya historia es increíble porque ha sido desde traficante de drogas hasta presidiario y ahora es una persona completamente nueva. Nuestros líderes de zona se emocionaron tanto que también asistieron al bautismo.

Así que, después de todo, el campo está blanco.

Ha sido una buena semana, llena de altibajos, sí, pero también ocurrió uno que otro milagrito, y no nos podemos quejar.

Frustration & Miracles

So this week, we had a rendezvous with the African guy who stopped to talk with us earlier, we had a rendezvous with him on Tuesday at a coffee shop. His name's Lony, and likes to talk a lot. We realised about halfway into the rendezvous that he actually wasn't interested in our message. He just wanted to preach to us. It wasn't too bad, tho. We had a nice conversation about the spirit and about our faiths. He's a really nice guy, but he's really set on his Protestant beliefs, which is fine. 

We got to see our ami again and we reviewed the word of wisdom with him, since he is struggling with living it, and we wanted him to understand the blessings that come from living it. As always, the spirit was very present in the lesson and he was able to be very open and frank with us and we were able to hear his concerns and his problems, which we really appreciate. He's been having a hard time with coming to church in the past month, so that day we were really pushing him and reminding him of church the next day, and he told us he would be there for sure, but the day came and he didn't show up for any of the meetings and when we tried calling him, he did answer the phone, so that was pretty frustrating. Anyhow, we'll still try to work with him so he can continue to progress. 

We went to see a recent convert, André Bickel, a Frenchie who's living in a special home to rehab his knees, because he got hit by a tram. But we went to go visit him and he talked a lot about how apparently the church is planning on building a temple in Bretagne, which I highly doubt and the rest I didn't really understand because it is hard for me to understand him. But he's really fun comme même (anyway). 

Saturday night we contacted this Portuguese-speaking man from Angola who told us he'd be at church the next day. So on Sunday we expect a few people to come to church, but none of the people we contacted the previous week were there. So we were a bit discouraged. however, halfway into sacrament meeting, our old ami who dropped us a few weeks ago showed up with a friend. Their names are Jean Dongmo and Gid, both are from Cameroon. It was a huge miracle and blessing to see them there. We set up a rendezvous with them for later this week. It wasn't what we expected, but we'll take it. 

It was a fun week.

It's crazy to think that Leicester City won the English Premiere League and the UEFA Euro 2016 starts in less than a month.

Frustraciones y milagros

Bueno, pues esta semana tuvimos una rendezvous con el africano aquel que nos detuvo en la calle y así que nos juntamos en una cafetería el martes. Se llama Lony y habla hasta por los codos. La cosa fue que como a la mitad de la rendezvous nos dimos cuenta de que en realidad no le interesaba para nada nuestro mensaje, más bien quería predicarnos. Al final, la cosa no estuvo tan mal porque tuvimos una agradable conversación sobre el Espíritu y las creencias de cada quien. En realidad es un buen tipo, pero se ve que se toma muy a pecho sus creencias protestantes, lo cual está bien.

También pudimos hablar con nuestro ami y repasamos con él la Palabra de Sabiduría, ya que tiene problemas para guardarla, porque queremos que comprenda las bendiciones que se reciben si la observamos. Como siempre, el Espíritu estuvo muy presente en la lección y él se mostró abierto y franco con nosotros; también nos contó de sus preocupaciones y problemas, lo cual agradecemos. Todo el mes pasado no pudo asistir a la Iglesia, así que ese día lo animamos y le recordamos que fuera al día siguiente, y nos dijo que ahí estaría sin falta; pero el domingo se llegó y el susodicho nunca hizo acto de presencia, y cuando lo llamamos no contestó su teléfono, así que fue algo bastante frustrante. De todas maneras seguiremos trabajando con él para ver si puede progresar.

También fuimos a visitar a un recién converso que se llama André Bickel; él es francés y vive en una casa especial porque se está recuperando de las rodillas debido a que lo golpeó un tranvía. La cosa es que lo fuimos a ver y se puso a hablar de que la Iglesia tiene planes de construir un templo en Bretaña, lo cual dudo muchísimo, y lo demás no le entendí muy bien porque me cuesta mucho entenderle. Comme même (de todos modos) es un tipo muy buena onda. 

El sábado en la noche nos comunicamos con un hombre de Angola que habla portugués y nos dijo que iría a la Iglesia al día siguiente. Así que el domingo esperábamos ver que algunas personas fueran a la Iglesia, pero ninguna de las que contactamos hizo acto de presencia. Eso nos desalentó un poco; sin embargo, como a la mitad de la reunión sacramental, nuestro viejo ami que nos había mandado a volar hacía unas semanas atrás se apareció con un amigo. Se llaman Jean Dongmo y Gid, y los dos son de Camerún. Fue un verdadero milagro y una bendición verlos ahí; así que fijamos una rendezvous para reunirnos con ellos en la semana. No era lo que esperábamos, pero es una bendición.

Fue una semana entretenida.

Quién hubiera pensado que Leicester City ganaría la English Premiere League; y la UEFA Euro 2016 comienza en menos de un mes.

Six More In Mulhouse

This week was great.

We were able to visit our ami again and we set a baptismal date with him which at first we were a little hesitant at first, but he took it very well. He actually told us that before we came this week, he had a thought that he would be able to stop smoking by June. And beforehand, we were thinking of setting a baptismal date of June 4th for him. So after we set it with him he felt really comfortable and believing that it is possible for him to do that. The Spirit was really strong in the room for the whole lesson. It felt awesome. 

Also this past Wednesday, we had a ward fireside organized by the missionaries in which we showed 2 clips of Meet the Mormons. We challenged the members beforehand to bring a nonmember friend. Surprisingly, there were quite a bit of nonmembers there, which was great. Everyone loved the film and the activity.

It has been hard again to follow up on anyone this week because almost everyone didn't show up to our rendezvous, but we did have a successful follow up rendezvous with Phillipe, who is French and very curious and has a lot of questions. He is a very nice guy and will continue to meet with us. 

Yesterday we got off of the tram and a guy stopped us and started talking to us in English about the Bible and what we believe. We had like a 30 minute conversation about truths in the Bible and our beliefs and he's met with missionaries before, but he said he'd like to meet with us again to understand our doctrine better. So we're going to do that this week.

We got transfer news and Elder Bennett and I are staying here in Mulhouse! But there's still isn't anyone reopening Brussels. Hopefully that'll happen next transfer.

La semana pasada fue genial.

Pudimos volver a visitar a nuestro ami y fijamos una fecha de bautismo con él, quien al principio dudó un poco, pero al final aceptó. Nos dijo que antes de que lo visitáramos esta semana, había estado pensando que podría dejar de fumar en junio. Antes de eso, habíamos pensado en poner la fecha de su bautismo para el 4 de junio. Después que pusimos la fecha, sentimos mucha confianza y creemos que él va a poder lograrlo. El Espíritu se sintió muy fuerte en la habitación durante toda la lección. ¡Fue padrísimo!

Además, el miércoles tuvimos una charla fogonera organizada por los misioneros, en la cual mostramos 2 segmentos de Conozca a los mormones. Anteriormente habíamos desafiado a los miembros a que llevaran a un amigo no miembro. Para nuestra sorpresa, había una buena cantidad de no miembros, lo cual fue magnífico. Todos disfrutaron de la película y de la actividad.

Una vez más, fue difícil reunirnos con nuestros amis esta semana porque casi nadie se presentó a las citas. Sin embargo, tuvimos una buena cita con Phillipe, quien es francés, siente mucha curiosidad y tiene muchas preguntas. Él es un buen hombre y continuará reuniéndose con nosotros.

Ayer, al bajarnos del tranvía, nos detuvo un hombre y empezó a hablarnos en inglés en cuanto a la Biblia y a nuestras creencias. Conversamos como por 30 minutos en cuanto a las verdades que se encuentran en la Biblia y en lo que creemos, dado que él se ha reunido con los misioneros antes. Dijo que desea volver a reunirse con nosotros porque quiere comprender mejor la doctrina. Así que nos reuniremos con él en esta semana.

Recibimos las noticias de los cambios y, ¡el élder Bennett y yo nos quedaremos en Mulhouse! Sin embargo, aún no han vuelto a asignar a misioneros en Bruselas. Espero que suceda en el próximo cambio.

All Over the Place

Hello,

It was a jam-packed week last week.

On Tuesday we went to Paris to pick up Elder Bennett's legality for his second year in France, so we took some time to go see the Eiffel Tower. It was amazing. We spent practically the entire day in Paris so that was pretty fun. There were a lot of Asian tourists, as usual.

Then, on Wednesday we went to Nancy to do an exchange with our Zone Leaders, Elders Durant and Kelley. We went to Verdun to see one of their Amis there. Apparently there were battles in World War I that took place there. It was awesome. We worked a lot and it was very enjoyable. I got to go back to the gigantic chapel in Nancy. Man, it's so big. They really helped understand the value of working hard every day.

We also had our finding day here in Mulhouse on Friday. It went great. We had 4 members go work with us. It felt great to do missionary work with these members, because what president wants out of these finding days is for the members to be more passionate and enthusiastic about missionary work, which I think happened. We were able to go street contacting with a couple members and got a new ami out of that. We have a lot good members who are missionary oriented in this ward.  In the end, we had a lot of help and a lot of success came from the members coming and working with us.

Yesterday we had to walk to church because it was Labor Day here and the guys working the public transportation didn't feel like working. It wasn't a big week as far as work goes, but it was an exciting week nonetheless.

Can't wait until Mother's Day!!!! It feels like Christmas was yesterday. Keep getting warmer!

Por todos lados

Hola:

La semana pasada fue muy ocupada.

El martes fuimos a París para que el élder Bennett hiciera los trámites legales de su segundo año en Francia, así que nos tomamos el tiempo para ir a ver la torre Eiffel. Fue impresionante. Pasamos prácticamente todo el día en París y fue muy divertido. Había muchos turistas asiáticos, como de costumbre.

Después, fuimos a Nancy el miércoles para hacer intercambio con los líderes de zona, los élderes Durant y Kelley. Fuimos a Verdun para visitar a sus amis. Parece ser que en esa ciudad hubieron batallas durante la Primera Guerra Mundial. Fue muy interesante. Trabajamos todo el día y disfrutamos mucho. Pude volver a visitar la gigantesca capilla de Nancy. Es enorme. Ellos nos ayudaron a comprender el valor de trabajar con empeño cada día.

El viernes fue nuestro día de buscar personas aquí en Mulhouse. Nos fue muy bien. Nos acompañaron 4 miembros. Fue fantástico hacer obra misional con esos miembros, porque lo que el presidente quiere lograr con esos días dedicados a encontrar personas es que los miembros sientan más pasión y entusiasmo por la obra misional, lo cual creo que está pasando. Dos miembros nos acompañaron a contactar gente en la calle y logramos un nuevo ami a raíz de ello. Tenemos muchos buenos miembros que son inclinados a la obra misional en el barrio. Al final, tuvimos mucha ayuda y mucho éxito gracias a que los miembros trabajaron con nosotros.

Ayer tuvimos que caminar a la capilla porque era el Día del Trabajo aquí y los empleados del transporte público no tenían ganas de trabajar. No fue una semana de mucho trabajo, pero de todas maneras fue emocionante.

¡Estoy contando los días para que llegue el Día de la Madre! Siento que Navidad fue ayer. ¡Se está poniendo más caluroso!
