Plain and Simply

Hey everyone,

So we did some more batting again this week, and we ended up finding this lady who let us in who was pretty scared cause she probably thought we were TJ's but we went on to teach her and she was still hesitant on listening, but little by little she opened up to us, and we ended up showing her the Restoration film. She said in the middle of the film that she believed with all her heart that Joseph Smith saw the First Vision. The spirit was so strong, I swear sometimes I can almost touch it.

We also ran into a former member of the church who told us she wants to come back to church but her boyfriend is against the church. Unfortunately, I’ve seen many cases here of people who join the church, but then just fall off the map completely. It's pretty sad.

But also this week we got a call from a member telling us that our ami Marie Francine wanted to come to church this Sunday. It was quite a surprise to us, since she hadn't been keeping her commitments for a good while, now.  So we went over to her apartment to see her, and it turns out she's been reading the Book of Mormon everyday now! Our DMP (Ward Mission Leader) brought her to church and she enjoyed it. I know Heavenly Father is pleased with her effort.

This week I was reading in Jacob, and he talks about how us as humans try so much to complicate everything and to do more than is needed. But he explained how the spirit speaks plainly. And it speaks of things as they really are. It speaketh the truth and lieth not (Jacob 4:13). I like that cause especially as missionaries, we like to expound upon the lessons and broaden and focus so much on what we say, when in reality we just need to focus on how we speak in a way so that the Spirit is present.

Hola a todos:

Pues esta semana nuevamente anduvimos tocando puertas en edificios de departamentos y encontramos a una señora que nos dejó entrar, pero al principio estaba como nerviosa porque pensaba que éramos TJ. La cosa es que comenzamos a hablarle y aún estaba un poco renuente a escucharnos, pero poco a poco fue agarrando confianza y pudimos enseñarle el video de la Restauración. A la mitad de la película dijo que creía con todo el corazón que José Smith había tenido la experiencia de la Primera Visión. El Espíritu se sintió muy fuerte, en serio que a veces siento como que lo puedo tocar.

También un día nos encontramos con una muchacha que es inactiva pero dice que quiere volver a la Iglesia, solo que el novio no está de acuerdo. Lamentablemente, he visto muchos casos de personas que se hacen miembros, pero luego luego desaparecen del mapa completamente. Es algo bastante triste.

No obstante, esta semana recibimos una llamada de un miembro que nos dijo que nuestra ami Marie Francine quería ir a la capilla este domingo pasado. La verdad que nos tomó de sorpresa, ya que últimamente como que no ha estado siguiendo los compromisos muy bien que digamos.  Así que la fuimos a visitar a su departamento, ¡y resulta que ha estado leyendo el Libro de Mormón todos los días! El líder de la obra misional del barrio la llevó a la Iglesia y se la pasó muy bien. Sé que nuestro Padre Celestial está complacido con el esfuerzo de ella.

Esta semana estaba leyendo el libro de Jacob donde dice algo así como que las personas complicamos las cosas de más También explica que el Espíritu habla las cosas claramente como realmente son y que habla la verdad y no miente (Jacob 4:13). Eso me gusta, sobre todo porque a veces a los misioneros como que nos gusta demasiado exponer las lecciones y extendernos, y concentramos en lo que vamos a decir, cuando en realidad solo tenemos que preocuparnos en decir las cosas de manera tal que el Espíritu esté presente.

Bat 'em Up!

Hey everyone,

It's been a pretty good week again in La Rochelle. It hasn't been so hot lately, which is good. We've been "batting" a lot lately during summer vacation, and we've seen some good things come out of that. We found a nice African lady who's letting us come back again later this week, and we got a referral a couple of weeks ago that we finally contacted this last weekend, and she's letting us come back, too! She's a nice old, white French lady who lives by this really nice beach a little south of La Rochelle.

We also met with this less-active member who's from New Zealand and plays for the Professional Rugby team of La Rochelle. He's a really nice guy, but just struggles with his testimony. We're encouraging him to read his scriptures every night and he's doing so, and he took us out for an Asian buffet. Man It was delicious!

I really found interesting what Elena's friend said that us missionaries should go around with the police because those are the people that need the gospel the most. That's so true because especially here a nice area, every rich person doesn't care about religion, they just thing there's no room in their life for such a thing or that it's just unnecessary. I find that really sad and ironic. We've been working a lot on the poorer areas and have been able to find more believing people.

Oh, and we also found this awesome Romanian family who doesn't really speak French, but they have a nice spirit in their home. The whole time we were there we had a hard time communicating. But we're definitely going back this week.

With school starting again soon, we'll get a lot of college students back, which means Amis. We're looking forward to next Wednesday, when it starts. I'm so glad I don't have to worry about that...

La Rochelle is beautiful, I wish you were here. The tourists are everywhere I wish they'd leave. And being a missionary here is awesome.

Buscando gente en edificios de departamentos

Hola a todos:

Pues ha sido otra buena semana en La Rochelle y últimamente no ha hecho tanto calor, lo cual está muy bien. También hemos estado buscando personas que viven en edificios de departamentos y hemos obtenido buenos resultados. Encontramos a una mujer africana a la que podremos volver a visitar esta semana y también recibimos una referencia hace unas semanas; se trata de una mujer con la que finalmente pudimos hablar este fin de semana y también la vamos a poder ver. Es una señora francesa, ya mayor y muy agradable, que vive cerca de una playa bien padre que queda un poco al sur de La Rochelle.

También hablamos con un miembro menos activo que es de Nueva Zelanda y juega en el equipo profesional de rugby de La Rochelle. Es muy buena onda pero su testimonio no es muy fuerte. Lo hemos instado a que lea las Escrituras todas las noches y lo está haciendo. También nos llevó a comer a un lugar que es un buffet de comida asiática, ¡y estuvo delicioso!

Me pareció muy interesante lo que dijo el élder de la misión de Elena, en cuanto a que los misioneros deberíamos andar detrás de los policías porque la gente que ellos buscan es la que más necesita el Evangelio. Eso es muy cierto, sobre todo en un lugar tan bonito como éste, donde a los ricos no les importa la religión porque creen que no tienen tiempo o que simplemente es algo innecesario. Eso me parece muy triste y a la vez irónico. Hemos estado trabajando en las zonas más modestas de la ciudad y hemos encontrado personas más creyentes.

Por cierto que encontramos a una estupenda familia rumana que no habla francés muy bien que digamos, pero en su hogar se respira un espíritu muy agradable. Todo el rato que estuvimos con ellos nos costó mucho comunicarnos, pero esta semana vamos a regresar a visitarlos sí o sí.

Como las clases ya están a punto de comenzar, por acá habrá muchos estudiantes universitarios, lo cual significa que tendremos amis. Ya queremos que sea miércoles, que es la fecha de regreso a clases y qué bueno que no tengo que preocuparme por ir a la escuela.

La Rochelle es un lugar hermoso, ojalá estuvieran aquí y hay turistas por todas partes, los cuales ojalá se fueran. La verdad que es bien padre estar de misionero en este lugar.

Buses, Batting, Beaches, & Bible Study

Happy Assumption Day!

This week was pretty good. It was my first full week here in La Rochelle and it was hot! It got to about 93 degrees yesterday and it's obviously very humid here, so it was quiet hot.

We went to Nantes on Tuesday for district meeting. We got up at 3:30 and grabbed a 5:29 train to Poitiers, then took a 3-hour bus from there to Nantes. It was pretty crazy.

My District Leader is Elder Kaonohi from Hawaii, he's like 300 lbs. and is so warm and loving. And our district is 10 people which is by far the biggest district I've had.

We had a couple of discussions with the religious guys: Rudy, Davis and David. Which went ok. Sometimes it's hard to "teach" people about what you believe when they constantly lead back to what they believe. There's nothing wrong with them having their beliefs, it's just hard for us to have them progress in the gospel... Nonetheless, we still love them and try to press forward with them. We went to the Bible study at Rudy's house again, and we had a nice discussion on how to be saved. It's cool to see different perspectives of different Christians.

We did a lot of what we call "batting" this week, which is going through apartment complexes. In French, building is "bâtiment" and so that's just the name we've given to that. We found a couple of really nice old French ladies who let us come back another time, and we found this couple where the man was Cuban and the wife was French, which I found to be pretty cool. They gave us a referral.

We had a nice mangezvous with Sœur Tove, and her husband Alan. She's Danish and British and He's British, too. It was all in English and we had barbecued chicken, which was not usual for me. It was a good time.

I gotta say, it's pretty hard to be a missionary here because the beach is just so close and we walk by it all the time and everyone's playing in the water. And all we can do is look. Definitely, La Rochelle is a place I'll hit up when I come back.

Me and Brown are getting along well, too. We kind of have this nice bond of both of us being minorities and not being perfect at French. But in all seriousness, I do feel the power of the gift of tongues, more now than ever. Everyone is impressed at my speaking ability for not having been here for even a year. The power of God is real!

Sorry papi, I'll get a haircut this week.

Hola:

¡Feliz Día de la Asunción!

Esta semana nos fue bastante bien. Fue mi primera semana completa en La Rochelle, ¡e hizo mucho calor! Ayer estuvo como a 34 grados centígrados y obviamente que éste es un lugar muy húmedo, así que se sintió mucho calor.

El martes fuimos a una reunión de distrito a Nantes. Nos levantamos a las 3:30 de la mañana y tomamos un tren a Poitiers, y luego viajamos tres horas en autobús hasta Nantes. Fue una locura.

El líder de distrito es el élder Kaonohi que es de Hawai, pesa como 140 kilos y es sumamente amable y afectuoso. El distrito lo integramos 10 misioneros, por lo que es el más grande en el que he estado hasta el momento.

También tuvimos un par de charlas con unos muchachos que son religiosos. Se llaman Rudy, Davis y David, y la cosa estuvo muy bien. A veces cuesta mucho enseñar a algunas personas lo que uno cree, ya que ellas constantemente hablan de sus propias creencias. Por supuesto que eso no tiene nada de malo, pero así es difícil que progresen en el Evangelio. No obstante, aún les tenemos aprecio y seguiremos intentándolo con ellos. Fuimos otra vez a la casa de Rudy a estudiar la Biblia y tuvimos una buena charla sobre el tema de la salvación. La verdad que es interesante ver los distintos puntos de vista de otros cristianos.

Esta semana nos dedicamos mucho a algo que llamamos “batting”, lo cual consiste en ir a complejos de edificios de departamentos. En francés, edificio se dice “bâtiment”, por eso hemos decidido llamar así a esa actividad. Encontramos a dos señoras francesas muy agradables que nos permitirán regresar nuevamente y también encontramos a una pareja en la que el esposo es cubano y la esposa es francesa, lo cual se me hizo muy padre, y además nos dieron una referencia.

También tuvimos una mangezvous con la sœur Tove y su esposo Alan. Ella es mitad danesa y mitad británica, y él es británico. Todo el rato hablamos inglés y comimos pollo a la parrilla, lo cual fue un poco fuera de lo común para mí y la pasamos muy bien.

Tengo que reconocerlo: Es bastante difícil estar de misionero en este lugar, ya que la playa nos queda bien cerca y a cada rato pasamos por ahí y vemos a la gente jugar en el mar. A nosotros no nos queda más que ver, así que en definitiva que La Rochelle es un lugar que quiero regresar algún día.

El élder Brown y yo nos llevamos muy bien. Tenemos una especie de vínculo buena onda por el hecho de ser minorías y no hablar un francés perfecto. Hablando en serio, puedo decir que ahora, más que nunca, siento el poder del don de lenguas. A muchas personas les ha impresionado mi manejo del idioma, ya que no llevo ni siquiera un año en el país. No cabe duda de que el poder de Dios es algo real.

Lo siento papi, esta semana me voy a cortar el pelo.

La Nouvelle Ville

Hey everyone,

A lot has changed in the last week. It's crazy living the life of a missionary because you feel like you're going to stay somewhere forever, and then when you leave, it feels like you were in the area for like a week. It was a little bitter sweet to leave Mulhouse, it was very enjoyable of course, and the ward was very loving. But I was excited for my next area, because everyone told me that La Rochelle was great.

La Rochelle is very pretty, (it's not Acapulco, but it'll do) but it's so far away from everything. We took a 3-hour train from Paris to get all the way out here. And we'll have to take a 6-hour train to get to Nantes tomorrow for District Meeting. Six hours???? There's been a lot of talk that this area should be part of the Lyon Mission, and I completely agree. We'll see how my time goes here because it seems like you can't have it all go your way.

Whatever, c'est pas grave. The city has a very old-French architecture to it. And all of the buildings are white. The Beach is just a two minute walk from our apartment, so that's nice. And we live right by this petting zoo with peacocks and a cow and chickens and goats, and all of the animals go off all day long. Elder Brown is in his third transfer, so he's only been out for 3 months and his French is not the best. He's 23 years-old and a convert of a few years. So he brings something different to the table. Like I mentioned before, he's black, so it's Minorities preaching in La Rochelle. The area itself is pretty slow right now, since according to Elder Brown, in the past, the missionaries here have not really done much. But we do have a couple of young guys that we see every week who are Evangelist and Protestant and are very practicing. Their names are Rudy and Davis. The ward is branch-sized. It barely meets the qualifications to be a ward. We have an average of 40 people who come each week and everyone's old and French. So how about that for a change. Pretty much everyone in the city is French, too. And we have a lot of tourists from everywhere here. And it doesn't get that hot here, surprisingly. All in all, it's not bad :)

I'm looking forward to all that'll happen here in the next 4-6 months, and the Olympics that I'm going to miss... Hopefully Usain Bolt will retire perfect.

I guess that's all I've got for this week. It's going to be a blast serving here!

P.S. Elder Norby just emailed me and he said that now he now can walk around his house without assistance. Isn't that great? He also said he served in Mulhouse, too, when he served here as a boy in the 60's. Who would've thought?

La Nouvelle Ville

Hola a todos:

Muchas cosas han cambiado en esta última semana. La vida de un misionero es una locura porque al llegar a vivir a un lugar uno siente como que estará ahí para siempre y cuando es hora de irse a otro lado se siente como que solo ha pasado una semana. Irme de Mulhouse fue una experiencia agridulce, ya que me la pasé muy bien ahí y la gente del barrio es muy amable. Sin embargo, ya tenía ganas de conocer mi siguiente área por todas las cosas buenas que se dicen de La Rochelle.

Lo cierto es que La Rochelle es muy bonito (no es precisamente Acapulco, pero peor es nada), lo que sí es que queda lejos. Para llegar acá desde París viajamos tres horas en tren y mañana para ir a Nantes a una reunión de distrito tenemos que viajar 6 horas, también en tren. ¿Seis horas? Es por eso que muchos dicen que esta área debería ser parte de la Misión Lyon y yo estoy totalmente de acuerdo. Ya veremos cómo nos va por acá, porque de todas maneras uno no siempre se sale con la suya.

De todos modos, c'est pas grave. La ciudad tiene un toque arquitectónico francés muy antiguo y todas las casas y edificios son color blanco. La playa queda como a dos minutos caminando de nuestro departamento, así que eso está muy bien. Cerca de donde vivimos hay un zoológico en el que se puede tocar a los animales (pavos reales, vacas, pollos y cabras) que andan sueltos todo el día. Para el élder Brown éste es su tercer traslado, apenas lleva tres meses en el campo y todavía no habla mucho francés. Tiene 23 años y es converso a la Iglesia de solo unos cuantos años, así que tiene algo distinto que aportar. Como ya se los dije, él es de raza negra y por eso somos dos minorías los que andamos predicando en La Rochelle. La obra marcha lentamente en esta área y, según el élder Brown, los misioneros no han podido hacer mucho en tiempos recientes. Sin embargo, hay dos muchachos a los que vemos cada semana. Ellos son fieles evangelistas y protestantes. Se llaman Rudy y Davis. El barrio parece más bien una rama y apenas cumple con los requisitos para ser barrio. El promedio de asistencia a la semana es como de 40 personas y todos son mayores y franceses. Como novedad, no está mal. También, se puede decir que casi toda la población de la ciudad es francesa y se ven turistas de todas partes. Además, sorpresivamente no hace tanto calor en este lugar. En resumidas cuentas, la cosa no está nada mal.

Me entusiasma la idea de pensar en todo lo que sucederá por acá los próximos 4 o 6 meses, y en las Olimpiadas que me voy a perder. Esperemos que Usain Bolt se retire con su trayectoria perfecta.

Eso es todo lo que tengo esta semana. ¡Va a ser padre servir por acá!

À La Rochelle!!!!

Hey everyone,

So crazy stuff is going on. I'm getting transferred to La Rochelle!! It's out west on the southernmost part of the mission. It's right on the beach, too. I'm really looking forward to that. My new companion will be Elder Brown, from Las Vegas. He's a big black dude so it's going to be minorities in La Rochelle. I'm not DL any more, Yay! All I've heard about La Rochelle is that it's very beautiful and that it's full of attractive women, so I'll need to watch out. This is my last P-Day in Mulhouse and it's a little sad to leave, but I'm really excited for my next ville.

This last week we had an awesome Finding Day in Belfort. The ZLs were nice enough to come down for that. For the record, this has been the funnest zone I've had so far, and that has a big part to do with Elder Kelley and Stephenson, the Zone Leaders. I like when leaders are themselves and like to have fun, too. So to have fun, we had a zone activity on Saturday in Nancy with the whole zone. We played dodgeball, kickball and soccer. It was so fun. You know, as a missionary, it's very important to be focused and to work hard, but it's also important to take moments to do something different, to kind of recharge, in a sense.

Our ami, Marveen was devastated when he found out I was leaving, we've grown a nice relationship. He wants to start a business or something like that with me and my comp after the mission, but we'll see.

I've got to say I'll miss Kebabs and Muslims, because there won't be much or any of those in my next ville. I'm going to miss my district, too. It was such a huge blessing to have all these guys and they helped me out a lot in my first transfer as District Leader.

It really was a fun transfer. It had its stressful moments, but it was a lot of fun. And I only have 10 more.

¡¡¡¡À La Rochelle!!!!

Hola a todos:

Es toda una locura lo que sucede por acá. ¡Me voy a trasladar a La Rochelle! Es un pueblo que está al oeste en la parte más al sur de la misión. Además, está junto al mar. Me entusiasma la idea de irme para allá. Mi nuevo compañero será el élder Brown que es de Las Vegas. Es un hombrote de raza negra, así seremos minorías en La Rochelle. ¡Otra cosa buena es que ya no seré líder de distrito! Todo lo que he escuchado de La Rochelle es que es un lugar muy bonito y que hay montones de mujeres atractivas, así que hay que andar con cuidado. Hoy será mi último día de preparación en Mulhouse y me siento un poco triste, pero a la vez siento emoción por estar en la siguiente ville.

La semana pasada, el día de buscar personas estuvo padre en Belfort. Los líderes de zona tuvieron la gentileza de venir justo con ese fin. Por cierto, ésta ha sido la zona más divertida hasta el momento y eso en gran parte se debe a los líderes de zona que son los élderes Kelley y Stephenson. Me gusta cuando los líderes actúan con naturalidad y se la pasan bien. Así que el sábado tuvimos una actividad de zona en Nancy. Jugamos dodgeball, kickball y fútbol. Fue bien divertido. Han de saber que, en calidad de misionero, es importante estar concentrado en la obra y trabajar con ahínco, pero es igual de importante darse el tiempo para hacer cosas distintas para recargar las baterías.

Nuestro ami, Marveen se puso triste cuando se enteró de que ya me iba para otro lado, ya que llegamos a cultivar una buena amistad. Él quiere que mi compañero y yo pongamos un negocio con él después de que terminemos la misión, pero ya veremos.

Tengo que admitir que voy a extrañar los kebabs y a los musulmanes, porque no habrá mucho de eso en mi próxima ville; también echaré de menos a mi distrito. Fue una enorme bendición tener a toda esta gente que me ayudó en mi primer cambio como líder de distrito.

Realmente fue una experiencia divertida, con todo y que tuvo sus momentos de estrés. Ya solo me quedan 10 cambios.
