Hey,
Happy Halloween!
Welcome in the Christmas Season. It's crazy to think this time last year I was
in the MTC. Time flies when you're being annoyed, lol.
This week we met with
our Evangelical ami, Rudy, who is a very smart, studied, humble, young man. We
had a really good discussion about the truth and Christ's church. He'd been
given a Book of Mormon beforehand, but he is very reluctant to read it because
he sticks with the bible, and he only wants for us to use the Bible when we
teach. Otherwise the teaching means nothing to him. We love and respect Rudy, but
we need to teach out of the BOM as well. He confessed to us that Joseph Smith
coming out of nowhere with a new book makes him a little reluctant. He then
compared it to how Mohammed claim to have this book given to him by the angel
Gabriel, the Quran, which I thought was really interesting. I think if we're
not careful, we look at the church as something too good to be true, or
just a story passed down from parent to child. Thankfully it doesn't have to be
like that, we can all know personally for ourselves the truth. I love Rudy, but
he just doesn't have enough trust in our message to try it yet. Hopefully he will, because he'd make a great member.
One of these days we
were walking through centreville, and we saw a lot of food markets out and we
looked around and got two large crabs for 10€. We cooked them that night and they
were delicious.
Our DMP is awesome.
Yesterday he taught in 3rd hour about missionary work, and how members need to
do more. So he organised a special program for November that each day of the
month, a family is going to do a fast for the missionary work in the ward.
We're also doing a praying hour, too. We're excited for what blessings this
will bring to us.
This week I was able to watch the Saratov Approach for the first time. I
thought it was really good. And it was interesting to me that the director said
that the purpose of the movie wasn't to scare people out of going on missions,
or to show the dark side of missionary work, but to show that we need to rely
on God and accept his will. Cool stuff.
I'm still trying to
figure out French food myself. I guess something I haven't mentioned is how
good the pâtisseries (pastries) are. Every time I go to the pastry
shop I always get something different and it all tastes really good, it's just
a little expensive.
In Paris, one time we
ate at one of those outside cafes by the street, and I had a salmon with
veggies dish. From what I understand, the restaurant cuisines are very
expensive, but you can always get baguettes for really cheap.
I remember when I did
an exchange in Nancy, we went to this small city a few kilometres north called,
Pont-À-Mousson, which means bridge to monsoon, and there was a boulangerie
(bakery) that had the best baguette sandwiches in the world. Like, my goodness,
they were really good.
In Mulhouse I was
able to try a lot of cheese at members houses. It's all really good. What I do
really appreciate about French food is that I never feel sick after I eat a
meal. I can eat a lot and not feel bad because it's all really light.
And here, since there
are a lot of Middle Easterners, there are a lot of Kebab shops. A Kebab is a
sandwich made of bread and meat consisting of turkey, pork, chicken, and salad.
They're originally from Turkey, I think.
Lately I've not been
able to try many new dishes because the members don't feed us very much here.
But I'm sure during Christmas there'll be a lot of markets with cheap food. I
have not had escargot yet nor frog leg because it's hard to find, however I
think that escargot is a seasonal winter dish so I should be able to try some
this year.
Something that's interesting is that Domino's Pizza
is a lot better here than it is in the States. The dough is made better and the
ingredients are more fresh, too.
One of the biggest secrets in the world is that
French Fries aren't actually French, they are Belgian, so you have to go to
Belgium for some good fries.
We aren't running in the mornings here, it's pretty
cold in the mornings here so we just stay inside in the mornings and do
aerobics.

¡Feliz Halloween! Y bienvenida la temporada
navideña. Qué barbaridad, pensar que hace un año todavía estaba en el CCM. El
tiempo vuela cuando a uno le hacen la vida de cuadritos.
Esta semana volvimos a ver a Rudy, nuestro
joven ami que es evangélico, inteligente, culto y humilde. Tuvimos una buena
conversación sobre la verdad y la Iglesia de Cristo. En el pasado ya se le dio
un ejemplar del Libro de Mormón, pero está muy renuente a leerlo porque se
quiere aferrar solo a la Biblia y cada vez que le enseñamos solo quiere que
usemos dicho libro. De lo contrario todo lo que hablamos lo toma a la ligera.
Queremos y respetamos a Rudy, pero también tenemos que enseñarle del Libro de
Mormón. Nos confesó que el hecho de que se muestre renuente se debe a que le
cuesta creer que José Smith se haya sacado de la manga un nuevo libro. Después
hizo una comparación de cómo el profeta Mohammed afirmó haber recibido un libro
del ángel Gabriel, el Corán, lo cual a mí me pareció interesante. Sin embargo,
creo que, si uno no tiene cuidado, podría tomar la Iglesia como algo demasiado
bueno como para ser verdad o como una historia que se pasa de una generación a
otra. Afortunadamente, eso no tiene por qué suceder, ya que cada quien puede
saber por sí mismo la verdad. Siento aprecio por Rudy, pero aún no siente
confianza en nuestro mensaje como para hacer la prueba. Esperemos que un día lo
haga, porque sería un excelente miembro de la Iglesia.
El otro día andábamos por el centreville y
había un mercado enorme. Nos pusimos a tontear y compramos dos jaibas enormes
por 10 euros. Esa misma noche las cocinamos y estuvieron deliciosas.
El líder de la obra misional del barrio es
bien buena onda. Ayer, durante la tercera hora habló de la obra misional y de
que los miembros deben involucrarse más en ella. Así que organizó un programa
especial para el mes de noviembre, el cual consiste en que cada día del mes una
familia ofrecerá un ayuno en favor de la obra misional en el barrio. Además,
también habrá una hora determinada para orar por esa misma causa. Esperamos que
ese empeño nos traiga bendiciones.
También, la semana pasada pude ver por primera
vez la película Saratov Approach. La verdad que me pareció bastante buena. Lo
que se hizo interesante es que el director dice que la película no pretende
asustar a la gente para que no vaya a la misión, ni mostrar el lado oscuro de
la obra misional, sino más bien mostrar la necesidad que tenemos de confiar en
Dios y aceptar Su voluntad. La verdad que está buena.
En lo que respecta a la comida francesa, pues
todavía estoy tratando de conocerla bien. Creo que algo que no les he contado
es lo rico que son aquí las pâtisseries (la repostería o el pan dulce). Cada
vez que voy a una panadería compro una cosa distinta y siempre es algo que sabe
riquísimo, aunque también es un poco caro.
Una vez que fui a París comimos en uno de esos
típicos cafés que tienen mesas en la calle y comí un plato de salmón con
verduras. Tengo entendido que los restaurantes grandes son sumamente caros,
pero siempre se pueden conseguir tortas hechas con el clásico pan francés
delgado y largo a precios accesibles.
Una vez que hicimos intercambios en Nancy,
fuimos a un pueblito que queda a unos cuantos kilómetros al norte y que se
llama Pont-À-Mousson, que significa “el puente para monsoon”, y ahí hay una
boulangerie (panadería) en la que venden las mejores tortas de pan francés del
mundo. Válgame, en serio que son riquísimas.
En Mulhouse pude probar un montón de queso en
casas de miembros y todos eran buenísimos. Lo que me gusta de la comida
francesa es que nunca me siento mal después de comer. Puedo comer un montón sin
sentir malestar debido a que es sumamente ligera.
Por otra parte, por acá hay un montón de gente
del Medio Oriente y hay muchos lugares donde venden kebabs. Un kebab es un
sándwich de carne que puede ser pavo, cerdo o pollo, con ensalada. Me parece
que originalmente es de Turquía.
Últimamente no hemos podido probar cosas
nuevas porque no comemos mucho en casas de miembros. Aunque estoy seguro de que
en los días de Navidad habrá muchos mercados con comida barata. Algo que aún no
he comido es escargot (caracol) ni ancas de rana porque no se encuentran tan
fácilmente. Sin embargo, me parece que el escargot es un platillo de invierno,
así que espero poder probarlo dentro de poco.
Algo que se me hace curioso es que la pizza
Domino's es más sabrosa aquí que en EE. UU., ya que la masa es mucho mejor y
los ingredientes son más frescos.
Uno de los secretos más grandes del mundo es
que las papas a la francesa en realidad no son de Francia, más bien son de
Bélgica, así que para comer una buenas papas hay que ir a Bélgica.
Por ahora ya no salimos a correr en las
mañanas porque ya hace mucho frío, así que hacemos ejercicios aeróbicos en el
departamento.
